Medearis - Behind the Scene

Photography assists my seeing, remembering and understanding, but in pursuit of the most visually captivating photographs I sometimes miss the basic truths in the landscape. I’ve photographed the swamps and bayous of the Atchafalaya Basin since 2014 with a desire to capture the cypress trees. I often find trees on the edge of open water, photographing them against the clear sky with no nearby obstructions. The approach isolates a single tree and reveals their expressive shape but hides the proximity of the shoreline, and the often congested truth of the cypress forests.

Covey - Behind the Scene

Marty laughed when I told him what I wanted to do. It was the summer of 1998, and we were four years out of high school riding one of those casino-to-casino buses through Las Vegas.  Marty was celebrating his college graduation; I wasn’t. After dropping out my sophomore year, I was still trying to figure out what to do with my life. From reading “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and attending a Franklin Covey planner seminar, I gathered that I was supposed to be putting life goals into my daily to-do lists. Sitting on the edge of the boat with my legs dangling in the water, I flipped on my flashlight. The red crescent eyes of one, two...14 gators glimmered as they skimmed across the dark waters of the swamp. This was no time to hesitate.

The wind was finally calm in this protected cypress cove. The arching limbs, draped with Spanish moss, were perfectly mirrored in the water. The photograph I wanted was here  but it wouldn’t last. I checked the seals on my dry suit and slowly lowered myself into the water. My feet sunk into the silty mud as the warm water pressed against my body and around my neck

Octavia - Behind the Scene

During college, I worked as a restaurant server in the French Quarter, regularly using the St. Charles Avenue streetcar to commute from Tulane’s uptown campus. St. Charles is an iconic New Orleans street, because of the streetcar and because the avenue is a presentation of architecture, family history, and wealth. The houses are like the people who line the avenue during carnival season screaming for attention, “Look at me…Throw me something. Give me your gaze!”
